Kitesurf Costa da Caparica Praia da Bela Vista
Costa da Caparica is the only decent kite beach within 20 minutes of Lisbon. You cross the 25 de Abril bridge heading south and the Atlantic coast opens up in front of you. Praia da Bela Vista sits near the top of the Caparica strip, where the beach is wide, the water is calm and the wind arrives reliably every summer afternoon.

The wind: what to expect at Caparica
Portugal’s summer thermal, the Nortada, is what makes this coast work as a kite spot. It builds from the north every afternoon from May through September — consistent enough that we schedule lessons around it rather than waiting to see what happens. Most days it arrives somewhere between 15 and 22 knots.
At Praia da Bela Vista the wind angle is side-onshore. That matters for beginners: if something goes wrong the wind pushes you back toward the beach rather than out to sea. It’s one of the reasons this section of coastline suits learning better than spots like Guincho, where the angle and the power are less forgiving.
The beach and water conditions
The Caparica coastline runs for 30 km. Most of it is wide, sandy and flat, which makes it good for kite sports. Praia da Bela Vista is the section where Waves4Life has established a dedicated 250-metre zone for students. Within that zone there are no swimmers or independent riders to navigate around.
The sea close to shore is shallow enough to stand in while you’re learning body dragging and board recovery. No rocks and no hidden hazards. There is a small shore-break most days — typical for an Atlantic-facing beach but it’s manageable for beginners and something you’d rather learn to handle here than be surprised by later. Parking is right at the beach. There’s a bar-restaurant where the sand meets the dunes.
Caparica vs other kite spots near Lisbon
Fonte da Telha (35 min): Similar wind pattern to Caparica, fine spot. Gets busier in the water during summer.
Guincho (45 min): More powerful conditions 20 to 35 knots is normal. Great for experienced riders but the angle and the shore-break make it harder for beginners.
Lagoa de Albufeira (45 min): Flat water is nice for learning but the wind direction is critical N or NW only; anything else turns gusty inside the lagoon. Can also be lighter in summer heat.
Óbidos Lagoon (1h 15 min): Excellent spot with flat water, but it’s a long drive from Lisbon. Good choice if you’re making a trip of it, not the obvious option for a Lisbon-based beginner.

Kitesurf lessons at Praia da Bela Vista
All lessons run on current Ozone kites and Mystic safety gear. Every instructor holds IKO and IPDJ certification. Group lessons cap at four students per instructor.
We run beginner courses (3 to 5 days, starting from absolute zero), private lessons for anyone who wants to move as fast as possible, and advanced coaching with pro rider Paulino Pereira for those working on jumps or freestyle. Equipment is included in all beginner and intermediate packages.
How to get here
By car: 20 minutes from central Lisbon via the 25 de Abril bridge. Take the A2 south, exit at Costa da Caparica and follow signs toward Praia da Bela Vista. Parking is at the beach.
By public transport: Ferry from Cais do Sodré to Cacilhas, then the TST bus toward Costa da Caparica. Total journey around 50 minutes. We’ll send exact directions when you book.
